PRABHUPADA ON COW PROTECTION
  • "We have to keep some cows.......Cow protection means just like Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He is tending the cows............So in this movement, our one program is to respect the cows.........There are so many facilities afforded by cow protection, but people have forgotten these arts. The importance of protecting cows is therefore stressed by Krsna in Bhagavad-gita (krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam vaisya-karma svabhavajam [Bg. 18.44]).
  • ....So in this movement, our one program is to respect the cows. We chant this mantra, namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca. The brahminicalculture and the cows... Why they have selected the cows? There are so many animals. Why cow protection is so important in Krsna consciousness? Why Krsna personally Himself became a cowherd boy and was taking the care of the cows and the calves? Oh, that is very essential.
  • "We have to keep some cows.  Cow protection means just like Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He is tending the cows. He is going, taking the cows personally from His royal palace going to the forest whole day, working there. Is it not, cowherd boy?
  • We must tend the cows very nicely so that they give us sufficient milk. And with that milk we shall live. (Srimad-Bhagavatam Class 2.9.3 -- Melbourne, April 5, 1972)
  • "But cow is very important animal. You get from its milk so many nutritious food. So apart from religious sentiment, from economic point of view, cow-killing is not good. And from moral point of view it is not good because you drink cow's milk, so cow is your mother."
  • (Garden Conversation with Professors, Chairman of the Religion Dept. of U.S.C., and Dr. Stillson Judah, and others -- June 24, 1975, Los Angeles)
  • "The cows calf not only is beautiful to look at, but also gives satisfaction to the cow, and so she delivers as much milk as possible. But in the Kali-yuga, the calves are separated from the cows as early as possible for purposes which may not be mentioned in these pages of Srimad-Bhägavatam. The cow stands with tears in her eyes, the südra milkman draws milk from the cow artificially, and when there is no milk the cow is sent to be slaughtered. These greatly sinful acts are responsible for all the troubles in present society. People do not know what they are doing in the name of economic development. The influence of Kali will keep them in the darkness of ignorance. Despite all endeavors for peace and prosperity, they must try to see the cows and the bulls happy in all respects. Foolish people do not know how one earns happiness by making the cows and bulls happy, but it is a fact by the law of nature. Let us take it from the authority of Srimad-Bhägavatam and adopt the principles for the total happiness of humanity. The vaisyas, the members of the mercantile communities, are especially advised to protect the cows. Cow protection means increasing the milk productions, namely curd and butter. In the age of Kali, the women and the children, along with brähmanas and cows, will be grossly neglected and left unprotected. In the Bhagavad-gitä (18.44), it is said that the vaisyas are meant to deal in agriculture, cow protection and trade. In the age of Kali, the degraded vaisyas, the mercantile men, are engaged in supplying cows to slaughterhouses. The ksatriyas are meant to protect the citizens of the state, whereas the vaisyas are meant to protect the cows and bulls and utilize them to produce grains and milk. The cow is meant to deliver milk, and the bull is meant to produce grains. But in the age of Kali, the südra class of men are in the posts of administrators, and the cows and bulls, or the mothers and the fathers, unprotected by the vaisyas, are subjected to the slaughterhouses organized by the südra administrators. The cows milk is required for the sacrificial fire, and by performing sacrifices the householder can be happy. The cows, the brähmanas and the devotees of the Lord are all objects of His special attention because they are very important factors for the general welfare of living beings." (Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.44
Our founder/acarya, His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada leaves no doubt about our mission at Gita Nagari.  We are to protect the cows, grow crops on the land to feed the cows and the devotees, and worship Sri Sri Radha Damodara in the Temple.  In this way, we can be happy and content with a simple life of plain living and high thinking.  Please support us in our endeavor to live a life based on cow protection.  We invite you to visit and experience our daily joys on the farm. You can observe our tireless cowherd men and women as they ensure our herds have access to fresh grass and fresh water.
URGENTseeking 50 donors to offer $30 each to pay help pay for this Wagon
PLEASE HELP US MAKE THIS A FEATURE AND OFFERING AT GITA NAGARI!

Look at what we have secured!  Please help us pay for this – we are able to purchase this for $3000!  However we have until this Friday (May 6th) to pay until it can belong to our oxen!  Coming out of winter here at the Farm means we have literally no funds for this.  When that happens, that something is available and we have no funds, we usually go without it.  However, in this instance, our oxen are involved and they would love to offer the service of pulling all of you on it!
Please donate here www.gitanagari.org/donation/cows – select the last “donate” button please, towards this beautiful carriage which will be pulled by our oxen.  They will give tours and rides to our esteemed guests.  And we sincerely hope you can also ride on this striking carriage pulled by our fine oxen.

PRODUCTIVE AND HAPPY OXEN
A long time dream of ours is  to engage the oxen  in meaningful work.  Our long range plan is to mimic the early days at Gita Nagari when the fields were tilled by oxen pulling plows and cultivators.  To that end, we have purchased an ox drawn cart that can transport 12 people and a driver.  Soon you will be able to tour the farm via ox power and see the dream come true before your own eyes.  We are requesting 100 donors to give $30.00 to help us pay for this investment.  Any surplus funds will allow us to acquire yokes and more equipment to expand our oxen project.  Nandi Prabhu tells us a working oxen is a happy oxen.
PROJECT UPDATES
Painting and staining the Temple exterior is almost complete.  Mr. Enis Yoder and two of his sons have worked very hard to restore and preserve the beauty of our natural wood siding.   We think you will be ecstatic with the finished product.  You and your family are invited to come see the transformation of our Temple.  Many wonderful devotees have worked extremely hard to give us a Temple that Sri Sri Radha Damodara can be pleased with.  To honor Srila Prabhupada and his many transcendental devotees, we make this offering to carry on the work they began in 1973.
With the help of 21 young devotees visiting from Krishna House and Jacksonville House, we continued our beautification of the grounds at the farm.  Their enthusiasm and willingness to serve inspired us to make a greater effort to overcome the inevitable obstacles that confront a project as grand as this one.  We are sooo grateful to them for stopping by to help us grow!!!
GITA'S GIFTS GETS A FACELIFT
Mother Jhulan yatra and Kumari Gopi Prabhu have been working tirelessly to prepare the gift shop for our retreat season.  We know you will be pleased with their efforts to serve the devotees.  Stop by and see what's new, and ask Kumari Prabhu about her "acorn" deities.  You will be amazed.
OUR BEEHIVES HAVE ARRIVED
Kesi Mardana Prabhu has been working with our bee consultant to set up five hives to help pollinate the crops and provide honey for our Deities.  Having a sustainable bee community helps us all remember Krishna's pastimes and reduce our reliance on outside sweeteners.  Please ask Kesi how you can support this valuable project.  You can email him at This email address is being protected from spambots.
