Real Buttermilk available at Gita Nagari Creamery
What is Real Buttermilk?
The traditional butter making process results in two highly potent products; cultured butter and buttermilk. Buttermilk is the byproduct of churning cultured cream. Hence the name buttermilk. It has all the goodness of milk without the fat and in ayurveda it is used to treat many ailments. Beautifully explained on this website, "The cool drink which is very refreshing is excellent source of potassium, vitamin B12, riboflavin, phosphorus and calcium. Buttermilk is a probiotic food that contains the type of bacteria which instead of being harmful, has great health benefits for humans. People, who are intolerant to milk, do not have difficulty in digesting curd; therefore people who have digestive problems are recommended to consume buttermilk instead of milk."
Now, what is available in stores is not the real deal as butter makers will tell you. Here is an excerpt from a NY times article explaining exactly what it is.
"But what few cooks know is that commercial buttermilk isn’t really buttermilk. It is made from regular low-fat or skim milk, usually low-grade rejects from cheese and butter companies. The milk is inoculated with cultures to make it acidic, and thickened with additives like locust bean gum and carrageenan. The result is a flattened facsimile of the real thing, as a ring tone is to a song."
New Outfits for Gaura Purnim
Preparing the Seed Beds - It was so nice to have Mother Ekayani's yoga group here! They helped fill all the seed beds (along with our regular Gita Nagari folks, of course).
Planting the Seeds - Thursday and Friday 26th and 27th from 2 to 5 we will be planting the seeds in the Greenhouse.
In Other News -
Tuesday, 24th - We had a group of about 20 from the USDA doing a Civil Rights workshop at our Yoga Studio. Parijata and Dhruva were hosting it and cooked them a wonderful lunch. Parijata also gave the group a tour of the dairy.
Sunday, 22nd - We had an enlivening Mother Daughter workshop at mother Yashoda Mayi's abode, she made such a nice dinner for us all. The association was very inspirational.

Spring: While we are to remain equipoised as the seasons change, I must admit that I am overjoyed that Spring is in the air! I feel exhilarated taking in the sights, sounds and smells as I walk around the farm during the morning milking.
Celebrations: It has been a very busy couple of weeks since we last exchanged. After an ecstatic Appearance Day celebration for His Holiness Srila Bhakti Tirtha Swami and then a glorious Gaura Purnima, we are ready for more festivals! I would like to personally thank every community member who so willingly came forward to make Gaura Purnima beautiful in every way, from a new outfit sewn by Suddha Bhakti Mataji to artistic decor to a literally nectarean Deity Bathing of both our Altar and Community Deities and of course a delicious feast. We are all very inspired by the team-ship shown by everyone.
Welcome Back: We are happy to welcome back Nandisvara das to the team - he is a very talented and capable devotee and we look forward to enlivening service with him.
Meeting: Our Community Meeting was a full house! We all listened attentively and shared in a lively manner and I think we all left very excited about 2015. I will have a summary of the minutes in the next week or two with various action steps. I was personally inspired by the youth who came forward so willingly with ideas, questions and service.
Spring and Retreats: Much is planned for the Spring - please come out to help us sow vegetable and herb seeds, and the cows always need attention, and there is much to do in the way of Spring Cleaning. We are excited to be hosting many Groups and Retreats, beginning in April.
We will put out in the next week or two a list of key Projects and Events.
Until then, we remain your eager servants.
Gentle Request: Since all of us at Gita Nagari are doing our best to be sustainable, we would like to ask the community to cooperate by bringing their own eating plates and such. Or if you are unable to do this, please offer a donation for the paper ones supplied by the temple.
Garden: Seed planting will be taking place March 22nd, 23rd, 26th, 27th & 28th if anybody would like to come and plant seeds, please contact Mother Jhulan.
